Pirates
From Freeradio
A Pirate can be a pirate radio station, ie an unlicenced broadcasting station, or a DJ on such a station.
Pirate radio in the UK, USA and most of Europe is also known as free radio (preferred), unlicenced radio (neutral), illegal radio (derogotory). Offshore pirate radio is often simply known as offshore radio.
In some countries (mainly Third World countries, notably in Latin America), some pirates have been allied to guerrilla armies and possibly backed by other states. These stations are known as Clandestine radio stations. Famous Clandestine stations include the 1980s South African ANC backed pirate, Radio Freedom.
Some licenced stations have called themselves pirates. Examples include the Cornwall ILR Pirate FM, and the RSL project Pirates For Peace.
Some former pirate radio stations now have licences to broadcast legally. We refer to these as Ex-pirates.
There have even been a handful of Pirate TV stations over the years.
